Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 places a statutory obligation on Public Authorities to carry out all their functions with due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and have regard to the desirability of promoting good relations.
Public authorities are required to produce an Equality Scheme which explains how they intend to fulfil these duties. Since the approval of its first Equality Scheme in June 2001, the Council has striven to mainstream equality and good relations at the various stages of policy making and in its’ service delivery.
The Council’s revised Equality Scheme and accompanying Action Plan will continue to ensure that equality and good relations issues are effectively mainstreamed into the business of the Council. This will be achieved in a number of ways which may include ‘screening’ policies to determine their impact on equality and good relations, conducting Equality Impact Assessments, monitoring policies, ensuring public access to information and services we provide and complying with the measures in the Equality Action Plan.
The Council is consulting on its updated Equality Action Plan and Audit of Inequalities for 2013-2014.
The closing date for receipt of comments is Friday 13 September 2013.
