The Cabinet Office in London has announced that Armagh City has been honoured in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with the status of Lord Mayoralty.
It’s the only city in the UK to have the award bestowed in this round of civic honours.
In its announcement, the Cabinet Office said it was particularly impressed by the description in the bid of Armagh as an “historic city” and that Lord mayoralty will consolidate “this small but significant place”.
Lord Mayoralty will be granted by Letters Patent and will be presented in due course, according the Cabinet Office.
Present Mayor of Armagh City and District Cllr. Freda Donnelly said this was a great honour for Armagh.
“This will mean we are the only city in Northern Ireland outside Belfast to have a Lord Mayor. We are delighted that the Queen has seen fit to award us this honour.
“We have been working hard throughout the council, both councillors and officials, to showcase Armagh as the significant place it is, and this honour recognises all that hard work.”
