It is the Council’s objective to ensure employees and members of the public are protected from dangers in a range of work activities and premises. Officers of the Environmental Health Department undertake the following duties in relation to Health and Safety:
- Provide information and advice to business owners, employees and members of the public
- Register certain types of businesses for health and safety
- Inspect workplaces
- Investigate accidents at work and complaints about unsafe working conditions
- Promote health and safety standards in workplaces

The aim of health and safety law is to prevent injury or disease to people at work and to those who visit workplaces. The law places responsibilities on employers, self employed people, employees and on manufacturers of equipment and suppliers of equipment for use at work.
