Dog control - information
The Dog Warden works within the Environmental Health Department and undertakes the following duties
- Dog Licensing
- Dog Control
- Re-homing of Dogs
- Micro-chipping service

Dog kennelling service to the public
The kennels will be open to the public between the hours of 9.00am – 10.00am Monday to Friday. Members of the public can also visit the dog kennels between the hours of 3.30pm – 4.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays.
The Dog Kennels will not be open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank/Public Holidays.
Fees
The following fees will be charged and conditions applied further to the impounding/release of dogs at the kennels etc:
- Unclaimed or unwanted dogs may be purchased for a fee of £20.00 or £50.00 if it is a pedigree dog with the relevant papers
- Unwanted dogs my be left at the dog kennels when open for a fee of £10.00 or they can be collected at the keepers home for a fee of £15.00
- All stray dogs reclaimed within 24 hours of impounding will be subject to a £10.00 kennel fee
- All stray dogs impounded for more than 24 hours will be subject to an additional £5.00 kennel fee for every day / or part day thereof that they are impounded
- Unlicensed stray dogs reclaimed and dogs purchased from the Dog Warden will required to be licensed (£5.00) prior to release unless the dog is to be kept at a location outside the Armagh City and District Council area where the relevant Dog Control Authority will be notified. These dogs can also be micro-chipped prior to release and any dog can be micro-chipped during periods when the Dog Kennels are open to the public
- All persons reclaiming their stray dog will be liable to a fixed penalty depending on the circumstances surrounding the impounding of the dog at the discretion of the Dog Warden
Dogs will not be released from kennels until appropriate fees are paid.
Dog licensing
How to obtain a dog licence:
If the dog is to be kept within the Armagh City and District Council area it must have a licence. This is available by:
- Telephone 02837 529623 or
- Visiting a Main Post Office
- Downloading application form
How much does a dog licence cost?
- A licence costs £5.00
- A person aged 65 or over and living alone is entitled to ONE dog license at £2.50.
- A block licence costs £12.50
How to obtain a Block Licence
Firstly you must meet one of the following criteria:
- Anyone who keeps on the same premises not less than 3 unsterilized bitches any of which are used for breeding (the person will also be require to be registered as a breeding establishment)
- Not less than 3 dogs registered with The Kennel Club or other approved organisation specified by the Department of Agriculture under Article 8 of the Dogs (NI) Order 1983
- The premises being the premises of guard dog kennels under Article 10 of the Dogs (NI) Order 1983.
