NI Regional Planning Context
The planning context for Armagh City and District is set out in the Regional Development Strategy (RDS) for Northern Ireland: “Shaping Our Future”.
One of the aims of the RDS is to develop an attractive and prosperous rural area, based on a balanced and integrated approach to the development of towns, villages and countryside. Development and review of the RDS is the responsibility of the Department of Regional Development.

Local Context – Armagh Area Plan
The local planning context for Armagh City & District is detailed in the Armagh Area Plan 2004 and the Armagh Area Plan 2004 – Alteration No 1: Armagh Countryside Proposals.
Development and Review of the Armagh Area Plan is the responsibility of the Department of the Environment’s Planning Service. In 2008, Planning Service has temporarily suspended any further substantive work on the preparation of the new Armagh Area Plan 2018. Though the 2004 plans are now past their end dates, they remain a material consideration in all planning decisions until replaced.
